I paint simply for the joy of it. It is a gift from God that enriches my life. I am a mostly self-taught artist with the aid of many wonderful books and a few videos, and inspirations from some great artists. My favorite subject is people, especially children. I enjoy doing portraits that capture the character or personality, an emotion or a mood of the moment. I work almost entirely from my own photographs and watercolor is my primary medium; but I also work in pastels, pen and ink, graphite or colored pencils, according to what I think will best capture my subject. I love the detail and have to be careful not to get carried away with it. The combination of reality and a bit of fantasy fascinates me and I want to draw the viewer into the painting. I like to paint characters that look like they just stepped out of history.
I have just completed co-writing and illustrating an activity and history book for the Magoffin Home Texas State Museum in El Paso which will be released some time in the coming year. I recently showed my new collection of the "Six Guns and Shady Ladies" portraits of an excellent El Paso western, historical reenactment group, in a show I called "Pistols & Petticoats" at the Framing Concepts Gallery.
I am a member of the El Paso Art Association presently serving a Director of Membership and a member of the Rio Bravo Watercolorist. I enjoy showing in the art shows of both of these organizations each year and have works hanging in private collections throughout the country.
